On December 6th and 7th the 2025 British Rowing Indoor Championships (BRIC) headed to Birmingham’s NEC for a third year, this time with a record 2900 entries racing in 241 categories, and entries including many Team GB athletes.
Roger Stainforth represented Durham ARC for a second year in the 80-84 age category, and continued his incredible run of success by winning gold in both the 2k and 500 metres events.
In the 2k race which took place at 10am on Saturday there was an emphatic victory for Roger in a time of 7.49.1, twenty seconds ahead of his closest rival Peter Jones of Doncaster Rowing Club.
The second win for Roger on Saturday evening came in the 80-84 500 metres in which a time of 1.44.5 (equalling his time at last year’s Championships) saw him home eight seconds ahead of second placed Patrick Wright.
In other events there was a new World record of 7.07.3 in the 75-79 2k for Jeremy Martin, a time which also eclipsed Roger’s existing British record for the 75-79 age group.
Samantha Ayers of Lakeland RC set a new British record of 1.43.5 in winning the Women’s Lightweight 55-59 500 metres.
Day 2 of the Championships continued with Super Sprint Sunday.

On Saturday proceedings were subject to a long delay following a medical incident affecting a competitor who sadly later died.

Before then the 2026 World Rowing Virtual Indoor Championships take place in February and entries are now open.
