Entries peak for Tynemouth Sunday League

Entries for the Sunday League equalled their all-time high for the fourth round of the 2025 league at Tynemouth, on a day when much attention in the rowing world was focused on finals day at Henley Royal Regatta.

Twenty crews representing 8 different clubs made their way to the Haven for a series of races in coxed quads over a 600 metre course alongside the north pier. Conditions were relatively benign for Tynemouth and good organization ensured that the scheduled 40 races were completed in just over 4 hours.

Now in its 14th year the Sunday League is aimed at novice, recreational and returning rowers and tries to be fun rather than competitive, though races can become quite competitive at times.

Crew briefing

A random draw took place in advance with each crew getting 4 races. Durham ARC had 3 entries:

Open division –

  • DARC Humour (Colin Lawson, Dave Green, Kira Larno-Bayne, Liz Baker and Hannah Lindsey)

Women’s division-

  • DARC Angels (Caroline Scholl, Jaqui Lynch, Gill Gilbert, Katherine Young and Samreena Diaz)
  • DARC Ages (Stacey Bielick, Sara Colclough, Manush McConway, Steph Billington, Rebecca Talbot and Caroline Fardoe)

Dave Green and Paddy Deans also provided coxing.

Heading to the start

A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all, and though the success rate was limited there were wins for DARC Humour and DARC Angels while DARC Ages gained valuable experience in their first season.

Results can be found in the table below and on the Tynemouth page on the Northern Rowing website.

Tynemouth results 2025

DARC Humour hold on to joint 3rd place in the Open division, DARC Angels are 7th and DARC Ages 8th in the Women’s division. Tyne ARC now lead the way in both competitions.

With entries from Nithsdale this year the league has gone international for the first time with the leaderboard developing an England v Scotland flavour.

Thanks to Tynemouth Rowing Club and the Northern Rowing Council for hosting such a successful day.

Round 5 is a sweep-oar splash & dash event at Talkin Tarn on August 3rd.
