Eighteen entries from Durham ARC entered Tees Regatta on May 17th, the second of the year’s Northern regattas, joining those from 37 clubs contesting 126 races in fine but breezy conditions on the 850 metre four-lane course on the River Tees.
Banding of entries ensured that all races were straight finals. DARC achieved wins in 8 events.
Division 1
Izzy Maddison set the ball rolling with the first victory of the day in band 2 of the Women’s single sculls with a convincing win over York St John and St Peter’s.
The Masters Men had their first race of the day in band 3 of the Open coxed four in which they finished 2nd by a length to St John’s College. From an entry of 18 coxed fours racing in 5 bands Collingwood College secured a win by 0.75 lengths against Hatfield College in band 1.
Two WMasD entries from DARC contested the Women’s Masters C/D/E 1x in race 115 with Aisling Dutton getting the verdict over Rachel Terry by 0.75 lengths
The J14 4x+ achieved the third victory of the day for DARC by the same margin of 0.75 lengths.
The Durham/St Peter’s mixed MasA crew of Gabby Maxfield, Elliot Kay, Dave Beeby and Jess Harris survived a variety of minor incidents to take 2nd place in their MxMasA/B coxless quad race against Hollingworth Lake.
The Durham ARC/Durham School composite J15 2x won their band 2 race against Chester-le-Street by yet another 0.75 lengths verdict.
A fifth success concluded the action in division 1 with Richard Court and Andy Jaggard winning the MasG 2x by 2 lengths over Sunderland.
Division 2
Division 2 started with victory for the Senior Women in band 1 of the Women’s eight by a 3-length margin against South College and Hatfield College.
A close race between Tees RC and Durham in the Masters E 8+ resulted in victory for Tees by 0.25 lengths.
The next win came in mid-afternoon from the Masters F Women with Sam English, Gabrielle Moore, Helen McMillan and Christine Heppell achieving a 3.5 length margin over Tyne United in a WMasF/G 4x- handicap.
Division 3
With an entry of 16 Women’s coxed fours the DARC four was assigned to the second of 4 bands, in which they finished 2nd to Hatfield College, the winners of band 1 being Leeds University.
Two J14 girls coxed quads represented DARC in division 3, the band 1 quad taking 2nd place to Berwick/Lambton in their race, while the band 2 crew placed 3rd against Tees RC.
Aisling Dutton and Jenny Conroy in the WMasC 2x were 2nd to Hollingworth Lake B in a WMasB/C/D handicap.
Patrick Lakey was 2nd to Durham School in band 2 of the J18 single sculls.
The final victory of the day was another for the Women’s Masters, this time the WMasG eight winning by 1 length over Tees F in a WMasE/F/G 8+ handicap.
