A full entry from 26 clubs for Talkin Tarn Regatta on Saturday, July 5th included 23 entries from Durham ARC. Crews travelling from as far afield as Aberdeen and Newark contested 77 races over the 3-lane 700 metre course in what is always one of the most popular regattas of the summer season. A full day of racing in variable conditions that at times included a fresh breeze produced wins in 6 events for DARC.
Division 1
In division 1 the first win of the day went to the J13 coxed quad who overcame Chester-le-Street in the semi-final and Aberdeen Schools in the final.
The J14 girls 4x+ was less fortunate, losing to Queen Elizabeth High School in the semi-final.
The J15 1x lost against Sunderland in the final, and Izzy Maddison and Olivia Tute in the J16 girls single sculls went out in the semi-finals against St Andrew BC and Talkin Tarn respectively.
The Masters E and Masters G coxless quads also went out in the semi-final to Talkin Tarn and Cambois.
The J15 2x band 1 and WJ16 4x+ both raced in finals but lost against Chester-le-Street and Tyne United.
Division 2
In division 2 the Women’s Masters E 4x- went out in the semi-final to a strong Talkin Tarn/Castle Semple WMasF combination.
The DARC/Durham School J15 4x+ lost to QEHS in the semi-final.
DARC had two entries in band 1 of the WJ14 2x, one being a composite with Lambton RC. Both lost to the same Berwick/Lambton composite, one in the semi-final and the other in the final, after overcoming QEHS in the semi-final.
The Open 4x- lost to Sunderland in the final, before the second win of the day came along in the form of the J18 girls 2x who overcame Hexham opposition in semi-final and final.
Division 3
A flurry of victories came in the third division, the first coming from the DARC/Durham School Mixed School/Junior coxless quad who beat Tyne United opposition in both semi-final and final.
The Women’s 4x- then beat Glasgow Rowing Club in their final after seeing off Hexham in the semi.
Another victory went to the J15 girls coxed quad who saw off Cambois and QEHS in the semi-final before beating Tyne United in the final.
The J14 4x+ lost in the final against a Chester-le-Street/Cambois composite.
James Westwood in the J13 1x saw off Talkin Tarn in the semi-final before losing out to Berwick and Aberdeen Schools in the final.
David Westwood lost in the final of the MasC 1x against Guy Clack of Tyne ARC.
The final win of the day, in DARC’s only sweep entry, went to the Women’s pair who beat QEHS in the final.
