After the disappointment of defeat in the Lightweight Boat Race in May there was elation for former DARC Junior Matthew Edge winning gold in the A final of the Championship Lightweight Pair at BUCS Regatta at the National Water Sports Centre at Nottingham on Thursday. Representing Cambridge University Boat Club Matthew and crewmate Cameron Mackenzie rowed through their closest opponents from Surrey University in the later stages of the 2km course to claim victory by 9 seconds. Race result here.
Held over 3 days BUCS is the largest rowing competition for University students in the UK. It was rescheduled this year from May 1st to 3rd to avoid Covid restrictions effective at that time.

Matthew and Cameron followed up Thursday’s gold medal with a bronze on Friday in the Lightweight Championship Coxless Four in which they were joined in the crew by Freddie Scott and Eytan Cortissos. Race result here.
Results from the 3 days of racing can be found here.
Oxford and Cambridge don’t generally contest BUCS in strength, possibly due to the usual proximity of the date to the Boat Races, but both entered in numbers this year. Cambridge finished second to Oxford Brookes University in the overall Victor Ludorum, with Newcastle University third.
Matthew was a member of the successful DARC J18 coxless quad along with Josh Stephenson, Adam Morris and Harry Coe who won on the long course at Durham Regatta in 2018.
