Matthew Edge was selected for a second successive year in the Cambridge University Men’s Eight for the Lightweight Boat Race, which this year, because of the Coronavirus pandemic and closure of Hammersmith Bridge was raced over a shorter than usual course on the Great Ouse at Ely on Sunday, May 23rd. Lightweight men need to have a bodyweight of no more than 75kg.
Matthew is in his third year at St Catharine’s College but spent much of last summer training on the Wear in Durham.

Because of Covid restrictions the Boat Races have been scheduled to take place behind closed doors and over a longer than usual period, starting with the Men’s and Women’s Boat Races on April 4th, both being won by Cambridge. These were followed by the reserve crew races on April 25th, the Veterans race on April 30th and the Women’s Lightweight race on May 16th.
Last year also saw a unification of the Cambridge boat clubs with Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club and Cambridge University Lightweight Boat Club amalgamating with Cambridge University Boat Club.
Sadly for Matthew the race outcome of the Men’s Lightweight race was the same as in 2020 with Oxford this time taking victory by one and a half lengths.
