Playing for Success at

Playing for Success is an initiative funded jointly by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Local Authority and a Sports club, which in this case is Durham Amateur Rowing Club. It is aimed at children between the ages of 9 – 14 years, providing an opportunity for them to study after school hours in a new, exciting and well equipped environment.
The main objectives are:
- To help young people develop skills for independent learning
- To improve motivation in young people
- To encourage the development of literacy, numeracy and ICT
- To further develop the relationship between local schools and Durham Amateur Rowing Club
Curriculum Activities
Each session will take place in the ‘ Playing for Success ’ Centre at Durham Amateur Rowing Club in the centre of

Sport Activities
The children will also participate in activities using the new fitness room. They will be able to race against each other using indoor rowing machines as well as take part in other team games and physical activity. PE kits will be required. It is hoped that these sessions will encourage children to become more involved in rowing as a sport but also with DARC as their local club.

Staff
The centre is managed by Jeanette Woods, a qualified teacher and a Learning Mentor, Ivor Harkin. The rowing sessions are taken by Mark Bell, a qualified rowing coach. Volunteers are also welcome to assist.
